You got in, now what?!

Being a college student is hard work, especially if you are the first in your family to attend college. You may not have access to people who have gone through the process to shed light on the general experience of being first gen college goer. You may not have someone to give you the tricks of the trade or help normalize and validate the self-doubt or disappointment that arises when things do not go the way you intended. It feels like you are always left to figure things out - All by yourself.

1st Gen College Goer Group

therapeutic support to successfully navigate the college going experience

Are you feeling:

  • Alone because no one truly understands how hard you (and your family) have worked to get to where you are today. That life-things did not align so that you were automatically placed on the path towards college.

  • Ashamed because now that you are in college you are struggling while others seem to thrive. It feels impossible to make friends, to talk to your professor when you don’t understand the material, to ask when you need help.

  • Like an imposter - How did the university let you in? How can your family have so much faith in your ability to succeed?

  • Frozen - Too embarrassed to share your experience with the people who believe in you. Too defeated to go to class only to be reminded of how much you don’t get the material.

How group can help:

  • Connected and process with peers going through similar life experiences

  • Encourage the development of self-compassion and resilience to increase feelings of worth and belonging

  • Learn to manage anxiety, stress, perfectionism, and that pesky negative self-talk
